Identifying technology opportunities

Technology doesn't have to be new to be novel!

Smart business opportunities can be facilitated by an emerging technology or by an unfamiliar established one.

They may arise when technology watchers identify an unfamiliar technology to satisfy an unmet business need.

New business ideas may be triggered by the potential of a new technology.

Or it may be a question of whether to replace an established platform with an emerging, competitive, technology.

The name of the game is, always, deploying technology for business benefit.

Novel technology opportunities may well disrupt the established pattern of provision. Enterprises are no longer technically homogeneous. And the pace of technology change – particularly in areas driven by the consumer technology space – is far faster than enterprise planning and strategy cycles.

Technology watch, then, is increasingly important, allied to strong business knowledge, so that enterprises know how and where to balance opportunity, risk, and stability.

Tony Law was the originator of the STEP methodology for managing technology awareness and identifying the potential for real business benefit. InformationSpan can help span the divide between the enterprise tools in use now, and the potential – and risk – of the new opportunities.
